Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev 27th April 1891 - 5th March 1953
Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev was a Russian composer, pianist and conductor. He is regarded as one of the major composers of the 20th century. He created 7 completed operas, 7 symphonies, 8 ballets, 5 piano concertos, 2 violin concertos, a cello concerto, a symphony-concerto for cello and orchestra, and 9 completed piano sonatas.
In 1934, Prokofiev wrote the score for the Soviet film Lieutenant Kije. A ‘troika’ is a three-horse sleigh, so this music is often heard at Christmas time.
