Anton Grigoryevich Rubinstein was a remarkable Russian pianist, composer, and conductor, born on 28 November 1829. He is best known for founding the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, the first music school in Russia. Rubinstein was an extraordinary pianist, famous for his historical recitals which traced the history of piano music through seven grand concerts across Russia and even the United States.
As a prolific composer, he created 20 operas, with his most celebrated being The Demon, along with five piano concertos and six symphonies. Rubinstein also played a significant role in music education, notably teaching composer Tchaikovsky. He was born into a Jewish family but was raised as a Christian after his grandfather’s insistence on conversion. Rubinstein had a passion for philanthropy and community, often using his talents to support charity performances. His influence on music continues to be recognised, ensuring his legacy as a pivotal figure in the world of classical music.
