Väinö Aatos Hannikainen was a Finnish composer and the principal harpist of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. Born on 12 January 1900 in Jyväskylä, he was part of a musical family, with his father Pekka Juhani Hannikainen encouraging all his sons to pursue music. Väinö began his musical education at home at the age of four. Although he was often sickly as a child, he was cheerful and open-minded. Initially studying piano, he later switched to the harp, which he mastered under the guidance of Aino Kajanus.
From 1923 to 1957, he served as the principal harpist of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. His compositions include the first Finnish harp concerto and the ballet Onnen linna. His music is noted for its rich chords and expressive melodies. In 1952, he was awarded the title of director musices. Väinö Hannikainen passed away on 7 August 1960 in Kuhmoinen, leaving behind a legacy of significant contributions to Finnish music and culture. His works continue to inspire musicians today.
