Carl Davis was an American-born British conductor and composer, born on October 28, 1936. He passed away on August 3, 2023, leaving behind a remarkable legacy. Davis wrote music for over 100 television programmes, including the iconic series The World at War in 1973 and the beloved adaptation of Pride and Prejudice in 1995. His talent also extended to silent films; he created new scores for vintage movies and composed many concert pieces performed worldwide, such as the Liverpool Oratorio, which he co-wrote with Paul McCartney in 1991.
Davis studied composition with significant teachers in the United States and began his career in New York City. His early work was notable for its unique style, gaining him commissions for numerous radio and television projects. This led to high-profile works including music for The Naked Civil Servant and The Hound of the Baskervilles. Throughout his life, Davis’s music touched many hearts and remains influential in the arts today.
