Gustav Holst (1874-1934) – Op. 32: II. Venus, the Bringer of Peace
Gustav Theodore Holst 21st September 1874 – 25th May 1934
Gustav Theodore Holst was an English composer, arranger and teacher.
The Planets, Op. 32, is his seven-movement orchestral suite written between 1914 and 1916. Each movement of the suite is named after a planet of the Solar System.
The cool blue Venus follows angry red Mars (see this post). The music is slower and beautifully eerie, complete with relaxing tunes played on harps and flutes, shimmering strings, and solo violin passages to call to mind the Roman goddess.
