Description
Teach students how to listen – not just what to listen to.
Unit 1: Learning to Listen is a complete four-lesson Music Appreciation Curriculum unit for ages 10–14, designed to develop confident, thoughtful and independent listeners.
Students are introduced to a clear, repeatable approach to active listening. Across the unit, they move from first impressions towards more precise musical description, comparison, interpretation and evidence-based judgement.
The same listening routines return throughout the four lessons, helping students become more confident rather than starting from scratch with every new piece of music.
The four lessons
Lesson 1 – What Is Music?
Explore rhythm, organisation and intention through contrasting listening examples.
Lesson 2 – Hearing or Listening?
Develop active listening skills by focusing on repetition, change and purposeful re-listening.
Lesson 3 – What Do You Notice?
Move from first impressions to precise musical observation using appropriate musical vocabulary.
Lesson 4 – Listening Like a Musician
Compare musical interpretations, make judgements and support ideas using musical evidence.
A clear listening progression
Students work through a simple progression that can be reused across future listening activities:
Notice → Listen Purposefully → Describe Precisely → Judge and Justify
They learn to:
- identify significant musical features
- listen again with a clear purpose
- describe what they hear accurately
- compare musical choices
- explain the effect of those choices
- support interpretations and judgements with musical evidence
Guided Support helps students who need help getting started, while Push Your Listening prompts provide additional challenge.

Listening and appraising
The unit is designed to support listening and appraising work across upper KS2 and KS3 Music.
Students develop their ability to listen with increasing attention to detail, use musical vocabulary appropriately, compare different musical choices and explain their responses using evidence from what they hear.
The focus on rhythm, pulse, repetition, dynamics, timbre, texture, intention, interpretation and judgement provides a strong foundation for later work across a wide range of musical styles and traditions.
The unit is not tied to a particular examination specification or genre, making it flexible enough to use within a range of music curricula.
Independent assessment
Each lesson includes an Exit Listen using unfamiliar music so students have to apply what they have learned rather than simply recall a piece studied earlier.
The final Unit Listening Challenge asks students to transfer their skills to a completely unfamiliar extract and respond independently.
This helps assess whether students can:
- notice important musical features
- describe them accurately
- identify what changes
- interpret musical effect
- justify a judgement using evidence
Suitable for
This unit works well for:
- upper KS2 Music
- KS3 Music
- music appreciation
- listening and appraising lessons
- mixed-ability classes
- students with little or no instrumental experience
- general music and listening-focused settings
No instrumental performance background is required. The focus is on helping students become more confident and thoughtful listeners.
