Hugh Aston, born around 1485 in Leicester, was an influential composer during the early Tudor period. Though much of his music has not survived, he is remembered for his innovative contributions to keyboard and church music. Aston was not only a musician but also an active citizen; he served as a mayor, Alderman, and Member of Parliament. His musical journey likely began as a boy chorister at the prestigious Choral College of St Mary, where he would have trained in both plainsong and polyphonic music. By 1510, Aston graduated from Oxford University with a Bachelor of Music, having studied significant philosophical texts related to music.
After returning to Leicester, he played key roles in various musical and civic capacities, earning a notable wage for his services. He remained dedicated to his community, serving as a justice and a long-serving member of the town council. Aston’s contributions to music and local governance left a lasting impact, and he was buried in St Margaret’s Church in 1558.
