Jean Sibelius was born on 8 December 1865 in Hämeenlinna, Finland. He is celebrated as one of the greatest composers of Finland, particularly known for his seven symphonies. His music played a vital role in shaping Finnish national identity during a time when Finland faced pressure from Russia. Some of his most famous pieces include Finlandia, the Violin Concerto, and Valse triste. Sibelius had a deep connection to nature and often drew inspiration from it, as well as from Finnish mythology, especially the national epic, the Kalevala.

Sibelius began formal music studies in Helsinki, where he was encouraged by several influential teachers. Although he initially aspired to be a violinist, he ultimately found his true calling as a composer. He continued to create music until the mid-1920s, after which he entered a long period of silence, often referred to as the “silence of Järvenpää.” Sibelius’s birthday, 8 December, is now celebrated as the Day of Finnish Music, honouring his contribution to the world of classical music.
