Julius Fučík was a famous composer born on 18 July 1872 in Prague, Bohemia, when it was a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Known for his military marches, he composed over 400 pieces, earning the nickname “Bohemian Sousa.” His most recognised works are the “Entrance of the Gladiators” and the “Florentiner March.” The “Entrance of the Gladiators,” also known as “Thunder and Blazes,” is especially popular as a theme tune for circus clowns.
Fučík’s passion for music began early, as he studied under renowned musicians including Antonín Dvořák. He joined the army as a musician, later becoming a bandmaster. His music was celebrated across Europe and beyond, and even during his time in Budapest, he composed many beloved marches. Sadly, his life ended in Berlin on 25 September 1916, but his legacy lives on as his music continues to inspire and entertain people today.
