John Newton was an English man born in 1725. He is best known for writing the famous hymn, “Amazing Grace.” As a young man, Newton worked on ships, including those that brought enslaved people from Africa to America. He faced many hardships, including being forced into the Royal Navy and even being enslaved himself for a time in West Africa.

During a life-changing storm at sea in 1748, he prayed for salvation, which marked the start of his Christian faith. After returning to England, Newton renounced his involvement in the slave trade and became a priest. He dedicated his life to helping others and was a strong supporter of abolishing slavery.

“Amazing Grace,” written in 1773, reflects his personal journey from a troubled past to finding redemption. The hymn is now cherished worldwide for its message of hope and forgiveness, showing that change is possible for anyone, no matter their past actions.
