Barbara Strozzi, born Barbara Valle in Venice in 1619, was a talented Italian composer and singer during the Baroque period. Baptised in the church of Santa Sofia, her father, Giulio Strozzi, was a prominent poet and an influential figure in Venice. Despite being an illegitimate child, Giulio supported Barbara’s musical career, providing her with lessons and encouraging her talent. By the age of 15, she was recognised as an extraordinarily gifted singer.

Throughout her life, Strozzi published eight volumes of her own music, becoming one of the most prolific composers of her time. She mostly composed secular music, a rarity for women in her era. Many of her works featured poetic lyrics, showcasing her writing skills. Although she faced challenges in gaining patronage, Strozzi continued to achieve acclaim for her singing and compositions, proving herself a remarkable figure in music history. She passed away in 1677, leaving a lasting legacy in the world of Baroque music.
