Kate Emily Barkley Moss, born in 1881, was a talented British singer, musician, and composer. She was well-known for her 1911 song “The Floral Dance,” which became quite popular. Moss grew up in London and attended the prestigious Royal Academy of Music, where she honed her skills in singing and playing instruments like the piano and violin. Throughout her career, she earned praise for her versatile singing ability, described by critics as “a versatile artiste of great merit.”
One of her most memorable experiences came during a visit to Helston, a Cornish mining town. While attending the town’s Flora Day celebration, she was inspired to write “The Floral Dance.” The song captures the spirit of the Furry Dance, an event filled with traditional dancing. Although she wrote many songs, none achieved the same level of fame as “The Floral Dance.” Moss passed away on 3 May 1947, leaving behind a rich musical legacy.
