Howard David Blake OBE FRAM, born on 28 October 1938, is an English composer, conductor, and pianist whose remarkable career has lasted over 50 years, producing more than 650 works. He is best known for the soundtrack of Channel 4’s 1982 film, The Snowman, which features the famous song “Walking in the Air”. Blake was born in London and grew up in Brighton, where his musical talents blossomed early. His mother played piano and violin, while his father sang in the church choir. At age 11, he began singing lead roles in Gilbert and Sullivan operas.
After studying at the Royal Academy of Music, Blake initially took a break from composing and pursued work in film. He made a comeback by performing in pubs and was later signed by EMI. Blake gained fame working on music for television series and films, including A Month in the Country and The Snowman. He has also composed various concert works and has received numerous awards for his contributions to music, including an OBE in 1994.
