Pietro Mascagni was an Italian composer born on 7 December 1863 in Livorno, Tuscany. He is best known for his operas, especially his 1890 masterpiece, Cavalleria rusticana, which made a huge impact on the world of opera and started the Verismo movement in Italian music. Although some said he was a “one-opera man,” Mascagni’s other works, like L’amico Fritz and Iris, continue to be performed today.

Mascagni began his musical education at a young age and quickly showed talent, composing several pieces by the age of 17. His first cantata, In Filanda, won a prize in 1881. He gained great fame after the successful premiere of Cavalleria rusticana. Throughout his life, Mascagni composed around fifteen operas, an operetta, and numerous orchestral works. His talent as a conductor further enhanced his reputation in the music world. Mascagni passed away on 2 August 1945, leaving a lasting legacy in the realm of opera.
