Michael Arne ~1740 – 14 January 1786
Cymon Overture
Michael Arne was an English composer, organist, and actor. He was the son of the famous composer Thomas Arne and soprano Cecilia Young. Michael primarily composed stage music and vocal songs, contributing significantly to the 18th-century music scene. One of his most famous works is “Lass with the Delicate Air,” written for London’s pleasure gardens in 1762.
Arne wrote nine operas and collaborated on at least 15 others, with his most successful opera being “Cymon,” which premiered in 1767. He was born in Covent Garden, London, and spent much of his childhood with his aunt, the actress Susanna Maria Cibber. Michael’s musical training began early, and he made his stage debut in the late 1740s. Throughout his career, he faced challenges, including financial difficulties and personal losses, but he remained dedicated to his craft. Arne’s compositions often reflected the galante style, blending English folk music with Italian opera influences, leaving a lasting impact on English theatre music. His legacy continues to inspire musicians today.
