Mikhail Mikhailovich Ippolitov-Ivanov was a distinguished Russian and Soviet composer, conductor, and teacher born on 19 November 1859. He grew up in Gatchina near St. Petersburg, where he was exposed to music at an early age as a choirboy in St. Isaac’s Cathedral. Ippolitov-Ivanov studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, concluding his education under the famous composer Rimsky-Korsakov in 1882. His career began in Tiflis, Georgia, where he served as the director of the music academy and conductor for seven years, exploring the region’s musical influences.
In 1893, he became a professor in Moscow and later directed the Conservatory from 1905 to 1924. Ippolitov-Ivanov’s contributions were significant, including his composition of operas, chamber music, and orchestral works. Among his notable pieces is the orchestral suite “Caucasian Sketches.” He remained politically independent and continued to teach several influential musicians, leaving a lasting legacy even after his death in 1935.
