Kamal Uddin Ahmed, born Kamal Dasgupta on 28 July 1911 in Narail, Jessore, was a famous music director and composer in the Indian film industry. He worked mainly in Bengali and Hindi cinema before the partition of India. Kamal was greatly influenced by music from a young age, learning from his father and brother. He studied under renowned musicians and earned a doctorate in music in 1943, focusing on the famous composer Meerabai.
Kamal composed around eight thousand songs, using traditional styles like Rāga and thumri. His compositions featured in nearly eighty Bangla films, including well-known titles like Tufan Mail and Jhamelar Prem. His innovative shorthand method for music notation was a significant contribution to the arts. He married Feroza Begum, a celebrated singer, and their sons Hamin and Shafin are the lead singers of the Bangladeshi band Miles. Kamal Uddin Ahmed passed away in Dhaka on 20 July 1974, leaving a rich legacy in the world of music.
