Agathe Backer Grøndahl was a Norwegian pianist and composer, born in 1847 in Holmestrand, Norway. From a young age, she showed remarkable musical talent. She studied piano under well-known teachers in Oslo and later moved to Berlin for further education. There, she learned from influential musicians like Theodor Kullak, Hans von Bülow, and Franz Liszt.

Grøndahl became one of Norway’s leading concert pianists, touring in Scandinavia and Europe. Her performances were celebrated for their emotional expressiveness and technical skill. After marrying conductor Olaus Andreas Grøndahl in 1875, she focused more on composing and teaching. She wrote over 400 works, mainly piano pieces and songs, often influenced by Norwegian folk music and the Romantic style. Despite facing hearing loss later in life, she continued to compose and remains an important figure in Norway’s musical history.
