Francesca Caccini was an extraordinary Italian composer and musician born on 18 September 1587 in Florence. She lived during the early Baroque period and was known by the affectionate nickname La Cecchina, which her fellow Florentines gave her. Caccini was the daughter of prominent musician Giulio Caccini and received extensive musical training. She began her career at the Medici court, where she performed alongside her family and quickly gained fame.
Her most significant work is La liberazione di Ruggiero, believed to be the oldest opera by a woman composer. Caccini was celebrated not only for her compositions but also for her ability to teach music. Throughout her life, she balanced her duties as a musician and a mother. After her husband’s death, she returned to Florence, where she continued to compose and teach.
Francesca Caccini’s contributions to music and her role in shaping the opera genre make her an important figure in history.
